Hair Loss Information

The causes of hair loss are varied and many, however the vast majority of hair loss people experience could be considered normal. In a typical day an average person loses between 50 and 150 hairs.

"what's important is whether the person is re-growing hair"
In normal hair loss scenarios what's important is whether the person is re-growing hair at the same rate they are losing it. Only if a person believes they are losing more hair than they are growing each day do they have cause for concern. Hair grows naturally for a period of 2 to 4 years, before it naturally dies off. Natural re-growth often does not occur immediately as the hair enters a rest stage for several months before springing to life again. Cases where genuine hair loss is evident occur largely in one of two forms.

The first is referred to as Pattern Baldness, and afflicts men in the main. It is characterised by a noticeable shedding and thinning of the hair around the crown and temples. Over time the affected areas can expand to include a much larger proportion of the scalp.

It is less common for pattern baldness to affect the hair at the sides and rear of the head. These areas are less sensitive to the agent that is causing the hair loss, namely a male hormone named dihydrotestosterone (DHT.)

Although DHT is categorised as a 'male' hormone, it is also produced in the bodies of women, albeit in smaller quantities and means that women too are susceptible to its negative effects on hair.

Of more concern to the majority of women however, are the results of our second type of hair loss, Diffuse hair loss. Diffuse hair loss has a far higher rate of incidence in women than pattern baldness, and is described as a gradual thinning and shedding of hair in a uniform manner across the scalp.

"your ability to prevent and reverse hair loss has never been better"
In both types of hair loss their effects tend to become more noticeable as we get older, with the first signs becoming evident in persons aged between 20 and 30 years of age. Hair loss has a proven genetic component meaning that it's hereditary. If either of your parents display signs of hair loss it's likely that you too will be affected to some degree over the course of your life.

Modern innovations in technology and a greater understanding of the human body mean that your ability to prevent and reverse hair loss has never been better.
